What Is an Individualized Behavior Plan?

A structured roadmap targeted specifically to your child’s needs

An individualized behavior plan is a written clinical document that guides your child’s ABA therapy. It is not a template. It is built specifically for your child after a thorough evaluation of their behavior, communication, and daily living skills.

Also called a behavior intervention plan, this document outlines:

Your child’s current skill levels and baseline data
Specific, measurable goals across key developmental areas
Teaching strategies and prompting procedures
Replacement behaviors for challenging conduct
How progress will be tracked and reported

Be Needed: Signs Your
Child May Need ABA
Support

Recognizing when additional support may be needed

Consider an individualized behavior plan if your child shows:

Learning disruption: Ongoing behaviors that interfere with attention
or classroom tasks
Safety concerns: Aggression, self-injury, or wandering
Limited response to discipline: Time-outs or rules don’t reduce behaviors
Transition difficulties: Severe distress when switching activities or routines
School issues: Frequent suspensions or risk of removal from placement

Individualized Behavior Plan in Action:
Communication, Social, and Daily Living Goals

Targeted skill-building that supports real independence

A personalized ABA treatment plan targets the skills that matter most to your child’s independence.
Our BCBAs organize goals into three areas:

Communication

Requesting needs using words, pictures, or a device
Following multi-step directions
Reducing challenging behavior used to communicate

Social Skills

Taking turns during play and conversation
Recognizing emotions in others
Building peer connections

Daily Living

Hygiene routines such as handwashing and tooth brushing
Getting dressed independently
Following home and school routines without prompting

Goals reflect your child’s baseline data and your family’s priorities. Our in-home ABA therapy lets
therapists practice these skills in the environments where your child needs them most.

How an Individualized
Behavior Plan Looks:
Measurable progress
in Action

Baseline Data

Elopement occurred an average of 8 times per day over two weeks
Spontaneous verbal requests were observed 0 to 2 times per day

Measurable Goals

Child will remain in a designated area during outings for 10 consecutive minutes across 4 out of 5 opportunities
Child will request preferred items using 1 to 2-word phrases in 8 out of 10 opportunities

Replacement Behaviors

Elopement: Child uses a visual break card instead of running
Communication: Child uses a picture exchange card or speech device to make requests

Data Collection

Event recording for elopement; frequency data for verbal requests.
Your child’s custom behavior plan for autism will look different because your child is different.

Child Profile: 6-year-old boy, autism diagnosis, limited verbal communication, frequent elopement at home and in the community.

How We Track Progress

Data Collection and
Progress Monitoring

Continuous measurement that drives real-time adjustments

Data collection is the foundation of effective ABA therapy.

Every session, your child’s therapist records data on each active goal. Your BCBA reviews trends weekly. If a strategy is not working, the plan changes before the next scheduled review. If a goal is mastered, a new one is introduced right away.

We use data collection methods matched to each goal:

Frequency recording: How many times a behavior occurs
Duration recording: How long a behavior lasts
Task analysis: Whether each step in a multi-step skill was completed independently
Probe data: Periodic checks for skill retention and generalization

Progress monitoring stays transparent. Parents receive regular updates. Our parent coaching and collaboration service helps you apply these strategies at home between sessions.

FAQ’s

What Parents Ask About Behavior Assessment Plans

What does a behavior plan include?

It includes baseline data, measurable goals, teaching strategies, data collection procedures, replacement behaviors, and a supervision schedule. Your BCBA reviews it with your family before therapy begins.

How often is the plan updated?

Your BCBA reviews data weekly and holds formal monthly reviews. A full plan review occurs every six months or sooner if your child’s needs shift.

How is progress measured?

Therapists collect data every session using methods suited to each goal. Your BCBA reviews trends regularly and shares updates with your family in clear language.

Who writes the behavior plan?

A Board Certified Behavior Analyst writes and supervises every plan. Your child’s plan is never written by an uncredentialed staff member.

What is a functional behavior assessment?

It is an evaluation that identifies why a challenging behavior occurs. Your BCBA observes your child and interviews caregivers to determine what function the behavior serves. The findings shape the behavior intervention plan directly.

What are replacement behaviors?

They are appropriate skills that serve the same purpose as a challenging behavior. Teaching replacement behaviors is central to any effective behavior plan for an autistic child.

How long does it take to build a plan?

After the assessment is complete, your BCBA typically delivers a finished plan within one to two weeks.

Does my child need a diagnosis to start?

Most insurance plans require an autism diagnosis for ABA coverage.
